Describing graphs in English — Part 2: changes that are still happening
← パート1：終わった変化（過去形）パート2では、過去に始まって今も続いている変化の言い方を扱います。中心になるのは現在完了形です。
このパートで扱うことWhat this part covers
パート1では、sales rose in 2021 のように、終わった期間の中の変化を扱いました。このパートでは、「今」まで続いている期間の中の変化を扱います。期間がまだ終わっていないので、過去形が自然に感じても、ふつうは現在完了形を使います。
期間が「今」まで続いている場合に使います。
- Sales have risen by 20% since January.1月から今までの変化
- Costs have been falling all year.今年ずっと ― 今年はまだ終わっていない
- Demand has grown over the last three years.3年前から今まで
- Sales have risen in 2021.2021年は終わっているので、パート1の過去形を使います。

2つの形を並べてみると、違いは文法というより意味だとわかります。一方は「その話はもう終わった」、もう一方は「今の状況につながっている」ことを伝えます。
パート1 ― 終わった
Sales rose by 20% last year.
昨年1年間で20%増えた。話は昨年で完結している。
パート2 ― 今につながる
Sales have risen by 20% since last year.
昨年から今までに20%増えた。今の状況の話をしている。
会議で現在完了形が大切なのはこのためです。伸びている事業を過去形だけで説明すると、「それは過去の話」に聞こえてしまい、今の勢いが伝わりません。
形：have / has ＋ 過去分詞Form: have or has + past participle
主語が単数（revenue、the figure、demand）なら has、複数（sales、numbers、costs）なら have を使います。sales と numbers は、ひとまとまりに感じても複数扱いなので注意しましょう。
よく使う過去分詞
3つ目の形（過去分詞）は、表で見たことはあっても、話している最中にはとっさに出てきにくい形です。

下の3つ（increase、double、drop）は規則動詞なので、過去形と過去分詞が同じ形です。プレゼンの途中で risen が出てこなければ、have increased と言えば大丈夫。正しい英語で、不自然さもありません。
since と for の違いsince or for?
どちらも期間を表しますが、since は「いつから」、for は「どのくらいの間」を言います。1枚の図で見れば、もう迷いません。

現在完了形とよく一緒に使う表現：so far、up to now、to date、over the last five years、this year（今年がまだ終わっていない場合）。どれも「今」までを含む期間を表します。
Revenue has grown steadily for three years, and we have already passed last year's total.
売上は3年間着実に伸びていて、すでに昨年1年間の実績を上回っている。
現在完了形と現在完了進行形have risen, or have been rising?
どちらも正しい英語ですが、伝えていることが違います。使い分けられると、正確なだけでなく自然な英語に聞こえます。
have ＋ 過去分詞 ― 結果
Sales have risen by 20%.
20%という「結果」が中心。数字と一緒によく使います。今も増え続けているかどうかまでは言っていません。
have been ＋ -ing ― 経過
Sales have been rising all year.
「ずっと続いている」動きが中心で、今も動いている感じが出ます。合計の数字はふつう入れません。
実用的なルール：数字を言うなら have risen、数字なしで流れを説明するなら have been rising。
「今まさに」なら現在進行形
今の向きだけを伝えたいときは、完了形を使わずに現在進行形にします。
Demand is growing. Costs are falling. The market is changing quickly.
「今まさにこうなっている」という現在の流れ。起点を言う必要はありません。
強調したいときは currently、at the moment、right now を加えます。
日本人がよく間違えるポイントCommon mistakes
1. since と過去形
特に多い間違いです。since は「今」まで続く期間を表すので、ふつう過去形ではなく現在完了形を使います。
✗Sales rose 20% since January.
✓Sales have risen 20% since January.
2. have ＋ 過去形
have のあとは過去分詞（3つ目の形）です。
✗Costs have fell since April.
✓Costs have fallen since April.
✗Sales have rose steadily.
✓Sales have risen steadily.
3. since three years
期間の長さには for を使います。for のあとに ago はつけません。
✗Demand has grown since three years.
✗Demand has grown for three years ago.
✓Demand has grown for three years.
✓Demand has grown since 2023.
4. 今の変化に現在形
現在形（fall）は、習慣や一般的な事実を表す形です。今まさに起きている変化には、現在進行形（are falling）を使います。
✗Our costs fall at the moment.
✓Our costs are falling at the moment.
✓Our costs have been falling since April.
5. this year と in 2024
同じ内容でも、期間が終わっているかどうかで時制が変わります。
✓Sales rose 12% in 2024.2024年は終わっている → 過去形
✓Sales have risen 12% this year.今年はまだ続いている → 現在完了形
✗Sales have risen 12% in 2024.2024年はもう終わっているので、現在完了形は使えません。
6. 進行形と数字
進行形は「動き」を表すので、確定した合計の数字とは合いません。
✗Sales have been rising by 20% since January.
✓Sales have risen by 20% since January.
✓Sales have been rising since January.
7. have が抜ける
速く話すと have は短くなりますが、なくしてはいけません。短縮形（'ve、's）で練習しておくと、話すときに抜けにくくなります。
✗Sales risen since January.
✓Sales have risen since January.
✓They've risen since January. · It's grown since January.

この練習では、今日を9月中旬とします。今年はまだ終わっていないことに注意しましょう。下のグラフを見て、各問題で正しいと思う語を選び、最後に「答え合わせ」を押してください。
