Describing graphs in English — Part 3: changes that haven't happened yet
What this part covers
- Sales will rise next quarter.
- Sales are expected to rise next quarter.
- Sales could rise next quarter.
- Sales will definitely rise next quarter.definitely
Four ways to say a forecast
|---|---|---|
| will + 動詞 | Sales will rise by 10%.
| be expected to + 動詞 | Sales are expected to rise by 10%.
| we expect + 名詞 + to | We expect sales to rise by 10%.
| be going to + 動詞 | Costs are going to increase.
is projected to と is forecast to です。
Revenue is projected to reach 8 billion yen in FY2027, and the market is forecast to grow by 4% a year.
覚えておきたい形:is / are expected のあとは to + 動詞の原形です(to rise、to fall、to reach)。
How sure are you?
- is likely to rise · should rise · is on track to riseおそらく(根拠のある見込み)
- may rise · might rise · could rise可能性がある
- is unlikely to rise · is not expected to rise可能性は低い
Sales should reach 50,000 by March.
|---|---|
| around / roughlyおよそ | We expect around 50,000 users. |
| in the region of〜前後 | Costs should be in the region of 30 million yen. |
| somewhere between … and …〜から〜の間 | Growth will be somewhere between 3% and 5%. |
| at least / up to最低でも/最大で | The figure should rise by at least 10%. |
| a furtherさらに〜 | We expect a further rise of 8% next year. |
未来の時間表現by, in and over
|---|---|---|
| by〜までに | その期限までのどこかで | We should hit our target by the end of the year. |
| in〜に | その期間の中で | We expect a dip in March. |
| over the next …今後〜にわたって | 期間全体を通して | Costs will fall over the next six months. |
| within〜以内に | その期間が過ぎる前に | We should break even within two years. |
| from … onwards〜以降 | そこから始まって続く | Growth is expected from Q3 onwards. |
We will grow until March.
Common mistakes
1. will be + 動詞
✗Sales will be increase next year.
✓Sales will increase next year.
✓There will be an increase next year.名詞(an increase)なら be が必要です。
2. is expected to rising
✗Costs are expected to falling.
✓Costs are expected to fall.
3. Maybe
△Maybe sales will rise next quarter.
✓Sales may rise next quarter.
✓Sales are likely to rise next quarter.
4. I think … will not
△I think sales will not recover this year.
✓I don't think sales will recover this year.
✗We expect 50,000 users until March.「3
✓We expect 50,000 users by March.
✓Numbers will keep rising until March, then level off.
6. after two years
△The figure will double after two years.
✓The figure will double in two years.
✓The figure will double within two years.2年以内に
7. will definitely
△Sales will definitely reach 50,000 by March.
✓Sales should reach 50,000 by March.
✓Sales are on track to reach 50,000 by March.
✗This graph will rise next year.
✓This graph shows our forecast for next year.
✓As you can see, we expect growth to continue.

Sales rose by 20% in 2024. |
Sales have risen by 20% since January. |
Sales are rising. |
Sales are expected to rise by 20% next year. |
