Disagreeing in English
Disagree clearly, not softly
“Hmm, that might be difficult… maybe. I'll think about it.”
“I don't think that will work, actually — the factory can't retool that fast.”
How far are you pushing?
I'm not sure about that. / I see it a little differently. / Do you think so?
I don't think that will work. / I'd have to disagree there. / That worries me.
I disagree. / I'm afraid I can't agree.
✗You're wrong.
✗That's not true.
✗No, no, no.
I don't think that will work.
I'm afraid I can't agree.
Agree first, then turn
|---|---|
| I see what you mean, but…おっしゃることは分かりますが | I see what you mean, but the factory can't retool that quickly. |
| That's a fair point. That said,…一理ありますが | That's a fair point. That said, we'd lose the spring season. |
| I agree up to a point, although…ある程度は賛成ですが | I agree up to a point, although I'd want to see the numbers first. |
| You're right about X. I'm less sure about Y.Xは賛成、Yは疑問 | You're right about the timing. I'm less sure about the budget. |
| I'd agree if…〜なら賛成です | I'd agree if we had the headcount, but we don't. |
| There's something in that, though…そういう面もありますが | There's something in that, though it assumes the supplier says yes. |
Disagree with a question
|---|---|
| That will cost too much. | How would we cover the cost? |
| The supplier won't agree. | What if the supplier says no? |
| We don't have time. | Is four weeks realistic with testing included? |
How would that work with the current schedule?
What happens if the supplier can't deliver by then?
Have we looked at what that does to the margin?
Am I right in thinking this needs sign-off from legal?
Am I right in thinking…?
Common mistakes
1. "Can you deliver by Friday?" — "That's difficult."
✗"Can you deliver by Friday?" — "That's difficult."
✓"No, we can't make Friday. The earliest is Tuesday."
✓"That won't be possible, I'm afraid — but we could do Tuesday."
✓Can I just say something here?
✓Before we move on — I have a concern about the timeline.
✓Sorry, can I go back to the budget point?
3. You're wrong. / That's wrong.
You're wrong. That's wrong.
✗You're wrong. / That's wrong.
✓I don't think that's quite right — the figure I have is 4%.
✓That doesn't match what I'm seeing in the report.
4. But that will take too long.
✗But that will take too long.
✓I think that will take too long, though.
✓That said, the timeline worries me.
5. I think different about that.
I think differently about that. でも正しい英語ですが、会議では I see it differently.
✗I think different about that.
✓I see it differently.
✓I'd look at it slightly differently.
6. I'm so sorry, sorry, maybe I'm wrong, but perhaps possibly the cost is a little high?
✗I'm so sorry, sorry, maybe I'm wrong, but perhaps possibly the cost is a little high?
✓I'm afraid I don't think the cost works. We'd be 20% over budget.
7. I can't agree with you.
I'm afraid I can't agree.
✗I can't agree with you.
✓I'm not sure I agree.
✓I'd have to disagree on that one.
8. I don't think so.
✗I don't think so.(理由なし)
✓I don't think so, because the testing alone takes three weeks.
✓I still think the timeline is the risk here.
✓Coming back to what I said earlier — can we look at the testing window?
✓I hear you, but I'm still not comfortable with the delivery date.

I don't think that will _ with our current order cycle.
I see it _ — I'd rather protect the delivery times.
_ would that work with the December rush?
_ if a customer needs something in three days?
I'd agree _ we had more buffer stock, but we don't.
I'm _ I can't support that, given the December volumes.

- You're right that .認める
- That said, , because .
- Could we ?
