おすすめ・提案を英語で伝える
Giving recommendations in English
提案の表現を1つだけ覚えている人は多いのですが、困るのはその1つが場面に対して強すぎたり弱すぎたりするときです。このガイドでは、強さの選び方、表現ごとに変わる動詞の形、そして必ず添えたい理由の言い方をまとめます。
提案の強さを選ぶHow strong do you want to sound?
英語の提案には強さの段階があり、どの表現を選ぶかが内容と同じくらい印象を左右します。強すぎると指示のように聞こえ、弱すぎると本気で勧めていると気づいてもらえません。
- You must try the ramen place.最も強い。熱意を表す言い方で、命令ではありません
- I strongly recommend booking early.強く勧める
- You should talk to Sato first.はっきり勧める
- I'd recommend the Osaka supplier.仕事の場面でいちばん使いやすい
- It's worth checking the Kobe quote.軽く勧める
- You could try emailing them again.選択肢として示す
仕事の場面で無難なのは I'd recommend です。はっきりしていて、押しつけがましくありません。would を付けることで断定を避けられ、ちょうどよく和らぎます（会話では I'd と縮めるのが普通です）。このページから1つだけ覚えるなら、これです。
相手によって、適切な強さは変わります
- 友人に、店の話で You must try it.熱意の表現で、命令ではありません
- 同僚に、取引先の話で I'd recommend the Osaka one.
- 上司に、判断を仰ぐときは It might be worth considering Osaka.
- 上司に You should choose Osaka.直接的すぎて、指示のように聞こえることがあります
表現ごとに変わる動詞の形The grammar after each phrase
ここがいちばん間違えやすいところです。表現を1つずつ覚えるより、あとに続く形で3つのグループに分けて覚える方が早く身につきます。

-ing になります。to は付きません。
should / could / why don't you のあと

原形。-ing にも to 不定詞にもしません。
必ず理由を付けるAlways give the reason
英語では、理由のない提案は個人の好みに聞こえ、相手には判断のしようがありません。理由はたいてい比較で表します ― こちらの方が安い、速い、近い、確実だ、というように。
比較で理由を言う
Osaka is more reliable than Kobe.
Hakata is the fastest of the three.
Kobe is cheaper, but the lead time is three times longer.
短い形容詞は -er、長い形容詞は more 〜 than。最後の文のように、譲歩を添えると公平に聞こえます。
やめた方がいいと伝えるRecommending against something
やめた方がいいと伝えるときは、相手ではなく自分を主語にすると角が立ちません。You shouldn't は正しい英語ですが、指示に聞こえやすい言い方です。
I wouldn't sign a long contract until we've tested them.
I'd hold off on the Kobe quote for now.
I'm not sure nine days from Kobe will work for the launch.
よく耳にする間違いCommon mistakes
1. I recommend to visit the Kyoto office.
このトピックでいちばん多い間違いです。recommend と suggest は to 不定詞を取りません。to を使いたいときは advise に替えます。
✗I recommend to visit the Kyoto office.
✓I recommend visiting the Kyoto office.
✓I'd advise you to visit the Kyoto office.
2. I recommend you to book early.
間に人を入れても to は付きません。-ing にするか、that ＋ 文の形にします（こちらはやや硬い言い方です）。
✗I recommend you to book early.
✓I'd recommend booking early.
✓I'd recommend that you book early.
3. You'd better use the Osaka supplier.
教科書では had better を「〜した方がいい」と習いますが、実際には「さもないと困ったことになる」という警告の響きがあります。同僚や取引先に使うと、脅しのように聞こえることがあります。本当に警告する場面なら正しい表現です。
✗You'd better use the Osaka supplier.
✓I'd recommend the Osaka supplier.
✓We'd better leave now, or we'll miss the train.
4. How about to meet at two?
about は前置詞なので、あとの動詞は -ing になります。原形を使いたいなら Why don't we の形にします。

5. Why don't you to call them?
do を使った疑問文なので、あとには原形がそのまま続きます。

6. If I was you, I will wait.
前半は were、後半は would という決まった形です。主語が I でも was にはしません。
✗If I was you, I will wait.
✓If I were you, I'd wait.
7. I recommend Osaka.
文法の誤りではありません。ただ理由がないと相手には賛成も反対もできず、会議では流されて終わります。
✗I recommend Osaka.
✓I'd recommend Osaka, because their lead time is six days shorter than Kobe's.
8. You should wait for the second quote.
文法は正しく、同僚同士なら問題ありません。ただ上司に向けると指示のように聞こえることがあります。主語を自分に移すと角が立ちません。
✗You should wait for the second quote.（上司に対して）
✓I'd suggest waiting for the second quote.
✓It might be worth waiting for the second quote.
✓Would it make sense to wait for the second quote?
9. Which one? — I recommend you.
これだけだと「あなたを推薦します」（仕事などに）という意味になります。何を勧めるのかを必ず言いましょう。

次は別の取引先を、同じくらい説得力のある理由で勧めてみてください。価格・納期・サポートのどれを重視するかで、3社とも正解になり得ます。どちらの立場でも組み立てられるようになると、好みを述べるだけでなく、議論に参加できます。
