仕事と担当業務を英語で説明する

Talking about your job and your responsibilities

What do you do? と聞かれたとき、役職名だけで止まってしまう人はとても多いです。このガイドでは、そのあとの30秒を4つの文で組み立てる方法をまとめます。

この4文の形を覚えておけば、どこで聞かれても答えられます。

役職名だけでは足りないWhy the job title is not enough

I'm an engineer. は文法的には正しいのですが、会話はそこで終わってしまいます。英語圏のビジネスの場では What do you do? は「20〜30秒話してください」という合図で、一言で終える答えは謙虚さではなく「話したくない」と受け取られることがあります。

完全な答えに入れる4つの要素

  • 役職と会社 ― 何をしている人で、どこにいるのか
  • 部署やチーム ― その会社の中のどこにいるのか
  • 担当業務 ― 何に責任を持っているのか
  • 今の仕事 ― 今どのプロジェクトに関わっているのか

いちばん効くのは4つめです。相手に質問の糸口を渡すことになりますし、毎回同じ固定の文を繰り返さずにすみます。

at、for、in、on の使い分けPrepositions

中心になるのは4つの前置詞で、それぞれ違うものに付きます。ひとつ間違えるだけで不自然に聞こえますが、直すのはいちばん簡単なところです。表には、あわせて覚えておきたい as と with も入れてあります。

語付くもの例
at会社（場所として）I work at Sony.
for会社（雇用主として）at とほぼ同じ意味ですI work for a French bank.
in分野・部署・業界I work in marketing. ／ I work in the automotive industry.
onプロジェクトや作業I'm working on the new app.
as役割そのものI work as a translator.
with一緒に働く人、扱うものI work with the design team. ／ I work with large datasets.

I work in Sony とは言いません。会社には at か for、in を使うのは分野や部署のときだけです。

担当業務を表す表現The responsibility phrases

意味は近いのですが、置き換えられるわけではなく、そのあとに続く形もそれぞれ違います。覚えるべきは真ん中の列です。

表現あとに続く形例
I'm responsible for〜を担当しています名詞 / -ingI'm responsible for the budget. ／ I'm responsible for training new staff.
I'm in charge of〜の責任者です名詞 / -ingI'm in charge of the Osaka office.
I handle / I deal with〜を処理しています名詞I handle customer complaints.

for / of のあと ― -ing 形

I'm responsible for managing the budget.

前置詞のあとなので -ing になります。

to のあと ― 動詞の原形

My role is to manage the budget.

to のあとは原形です。

責任の大きさHow big is the responsibility?

これらの表現は責任の大きさの順に並びます。実際より上の表現を選ぶと他人の仕事まで自分のものとして話すことになり、下の表現を選ぶと本当の責任が伝わりません。

  1. I run the department.部門全体を率いている
  2. I oversee three teams.複数のチームを統括している
  3. I'm in charge of the project.決定権がある
  4. I manage a team of six.人を管理している
  5. I'm responsible for the schedule.業務を担当している
  6. I help with the reporting.補助的に関わっている

多くの人が当てはまるのは真ん中です。つまり I'm responsible for か I manage。最初に覚えた表現だからという理由で I'm in charge of を選ぶ人が多いのですが、この表現には「決定権がある」という含みがあります。

控えめに言いたいとき

英語では、文を短くするのではなく担当範囲を小さく言うことで謙遜を表します。

I'm part of the team that handles compliance.
I support the sales team with data.
I help with hiring, but I don't make the final decision.

組織の中での位置The people around you

組織の中でどこにいるかは、report to、work closely with、manage の3つでだいたい言えます。図の矢印がそのまま答えです。

表現例
report to〜の直属ですI report to the Head of Product. ／ I report directly to the CFO.
a team of + 数字〜人のチームI manage a team of six. ／ I lead a small team of three engineers.
direct reports直属の部下I have four direct reports.
work closely with〜と連携していますI work closely with the design team. ／ I work closely with our Singapore office.
work under〜の下で働く（経歴を話すとき）I worked under her for two years.
my counterpart他の拠点や部署にいる、同じ立場の担当者My counterpart in the Berlin office handles the same work there.

staff に注意。複数形の -s は付けません。a team of five、five staff members、five people のいずれかで言います。

在籍期間と、今の仕事How long, and what now

あと2つ加えると、名刺の読み上げではなく人の話になります。1つめは今も在籍しているので現在完了形です。

今も続いている ― 現在完了形

I've been with the company for five years.
I've been in this role since April.

終わった出来事 ― 過去形

I joined in 2021.
Before that, I worked in logistics.

今のプロジェクト

自己紹介を会話に変えるのがこの一文です。一時的な仕事なので現在進行形を使います。

At the moment I'm working on a new checkout system.
We're currently rolling out the service in Southeast Asia.
My focus this quarter is reducing delivery times.

よく耳にする間違いCommon mistakes

1. I'm responsible to manage the schedule.

for や of のあとの動詞は -ing になります。このトピックでいちばん多い間違いです。

✗I'm responsible to manage the schedule.

✓I'm responsible for managing the schedule.

✓My role is to manage the schedule.

2. I'm charge of the Osaka office.

in charge of は形の決まった表現です。in を落とした言い方は存在しません。

✗I'm charge of the Osaka office.

✓I'm in charge of the Osaka office.

3. I work in Sony.

会社名には at / for、部署や業界には in を使います。

✗I work in Sony.

✓I work at Sony.

✓I work for Sony.

✓I work in sales.

4. I belong to the sales department.

「所属する」を belong to と直訳すると、所有物のように聞こえます。in か、単に work で十分です。

✗I belong to the sales department.

✓I'm in the sales department.

✓I work in sales.

5. I'm an office worker at a trading company.

「サラリーマン」をそのまま salaryman と言っても、日本を紹介する記事の中でしか通じません。office worker も「働く場所」しか伝えていません。職種そのものを言いましょう。

✗I'm an office worker at a trading company.

✓I'm in procurement at a trading company.

✓I handle supplier contracts for a trading company.

6. I manage five staffs.

staff はそれ自体が複数の人を指す語なので、-s は付けません。

✗I manage five staffs.

✓I manage a team of five.

✓I have five direct reports.

7. I'm working as an engineer.

本業を言うつもりで進行形にすると、契約や期間限定の仕事に聞こえます。本業は現在形、期間が決まっている仕事なら進行形で正解です。

✗I'm working as an engineer.

✓I work as an engineer.

✓I'm working as a consultant until March.

8. My job is engineer.

engineer は「人」を指す語なので、I'm an engineer. のように人を主語にします。job を主語にするなら to ＋ 動詞の原形です。

✗My job is engineer.

✓I'm an engineer.

✓My job is to design control systems.

間違いではないけれど、言い方を選びたいもの

duty には「義務」の響きがあり（jury duty など）、そのぶん硬く聞こえます。job duties のように仕事の内容を指す使い方も普通にあるので間違いではありませんが、自分の担当を説明するなら responsibilities や role のほうが軽く自然です。

My main responsibilities are reporting and invoice checking.

空欄に入る語を選んでください。前置詞の使い分けと、そのあとに続く形が中心です。

同じ4行を、表現をすべて変えてもう一度言ってみてください。3行目に I'm responsible for を使ったなら、次は I look after や my main role is to で。同じ内容を2通りで言えるようになっておくと、3回目に聞かれたときも暗記した文の棒読みには聞こえません。
